BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose Health Benefits:
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) is a naturally occurring disaccharide and one of the key components of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). It is a fucosylated (neutral) HMOs and the most abundant HMO in breast milk, accounting for approximately 30% of total breast milk oligosaccharides.
■ Structural Characteristics
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is a trisaccharide structure consisting of an L-fucose residue attached to a galactose residue of lactose via an α-1,2-glycosidic bond. This specific glycosidic bond makes 2'-FL indigestible to human digestive enzymes and available only to intestinal flora, which is the structural basis for its probiotic function. BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is water-soluble and stable in neutral to weakly acidic environments (e.g., the pH range of the human intestine). It is also stable under mild heat treatment during food processing (e.g., spray drying for infant formula) and is not easily decomposed. However, 2'-fucosyllactose is sensitive to high temperatures and extreme pH levels and may degrade partially. Therefore, it is necessary to control environmental conditions during production and storage.

BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose Applications:
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose helps build the immune system in infants and children through several mechanisms. It mimics the immunologically active components of breast milk, attaching to the surface of an infant's intestinal mucosa and forming a "physical barrier" that prevents pathogens from binding to intestinal cells. This reduces the risk of infection. BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose also promotes the maturation of immune cells in the intestinal mucosa and enhances cytokine secretion, reducing the likelihood of allergic and inflammatory reactions in infants and young children.
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is a prebiotic that serves as "food" for beneficial intestinal bacteria. It selectively promotes their proliferation and inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria, thus maintaining the balance of intestinal flora. It stimulates the growth and differentiation of intestinal mucosal cells, enhances intestinal barrier integrity, and reduces the risk of undigested substances or toxins entering the bloodstream and triggering inflammation. BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose regulates the metabolism of intestinal flora, promotes intestinal motility, and improves constipation in infants and children. It also helps alleviate digestive discomfort associated with lactose intolerance.
▶ Brain development
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is believed to impact infant neurological development via the gut-brain axis by stimulating nerve growth factor expression and promoting neuron proliferation and synapse formation in the hippocampus. This process may positively impact memory and learning development. Its anti-inflammatory properties may reduce the indirect effects of intestinal inflammation on the brain and protect neurons from oxidative stress, supporting early cognitive development.
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is available in the following specification and contents:
As the third major nutrient in breast milk, BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose plays an irreplaceable role in the healthy development of infants and young children. It can be used in infant formula, formula for older infants and young children, and formula for special medical purposes. This makes the formula closer to breast milk and meets the nutritional needs of infants and young children. BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose can be used to modulate milk powder to enhance its nutritional value and provide better nutritional support for children's growth. It can also be used to enhance the nutritional value of children's milk powder. Additionally, 2'-FL can be used in meal replacements, beverages, dairy products, and cereals.
■ Nutritional value
BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is the most abundant HMOs in breast milk, especially in colostrum. Its natural compatibility with breast milk makes it a core ingredient in infant formulas that mimic breast milk. BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose selectively promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine and inhibits the adhesion of pathogens, such as E. coli and Salmonella. coli and Salmonella, and stimulates the production of short-chain fatty acids by beneficial bacteria. This maintains an acidic intestinal environment and enhances intestinal barrier function.
■ Production technology description
2'-Fucosyllactose can be produced by microbial fermentation, chemical synthesis, or enzymatic synthesis. Among these methods, microbial fermentation is the most common. BABYILY®2'-Fucosyllactose is a powder product that is made from lactose by fermentation, centrifugation, filtration, purification, concentration, and spray drying.During microbial fermentation, the microbial cells are removed through strain construction, fermentation culture, and microfiltration. Then, 2'-FL is isolated and purified from the fermentation broth using filtration, cation-exchange chromatography, and anion-exchange chromatography. Finally, the powdered product is obtained through concentration and spray drying.
Enzymatic synthesis uses enzyme catalysis to generate 2'-FL by reacting lactose and a fucose-based donor in a suitable reaction system. Enzymatic synthesis has the advantages of high specificity and mild reaction conditions. However, enzyme preparation is costly, and enzyme stability and activity are easily affected by external factors. Thus, optimizing the reaction conditions is necessary to improve catalytic efficiency and stability.
In the chemical synthesis method, lactose is used as the raw material. After a series of chemical reactions under specific conditions, the lactose, fucose, and other related compounds undergo a glycosylation reaction to produce 2'-FL. This method's reaction conditions are relatively harsh. It requires expensive reagents and catalysts. The synthesis process is complex. Product separation and purification are difficult. The cost is high. This method is currently used for large-scale production of 2'-FL. This method is not widely used for large-scale production.
