BABYILY®HMOs Health Benefits:

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), also known as human milk glycans, are short polymers of simple sugars that can be found in high concentrations in human breast milk. Human milk oligosaccharides promote the development of the immune system, can reduce the risk of pathogen infections and improve brain development and cognition. The HMOs profile of human breast milk shapes the gut microbiota of the infant by selectively stimulating bifidobacteria and other bacteria.

Richtek has been committed to using artificial intelligence to assist in the industrial transformation of synthetic biology technology and laboratory achievements, promoting the healthy development of HMOs in China.

■ Source

BABYILY®HMOs are the third most abundant solid component (dissolved, emulsified or suspended in water) of human milk after lactose and fat. HMOs are present in human milk at concentrations ranging from 11.3 to 17.7g/L, depending on the stage of lactation. Approximately 200 structurally different human milk oligosaccharides are known and can be classified into fucosylated, sialylated and neutral core HMOs. The composition of human milk oligosaccharides in breast milk is unique to each mother and varies over the course of lactation. The dominant oligosaccharide in 80% of all women is 2′-fucosyllactose, which is present in human milk at a concentration of approximately 2.5g/L; other abundant oligosaccharides include lacto-N-tetraose, lacto-N-neotetraose, and lacto-N-fucopentaose. Numerous studies have shown that the concentration of each individual human milk oligosaccharide changes during the different phases of lactation (colostrum, transition, mature and late milk) and depends on various factors such as the mother's genetic secretor status and gestational age.

BABYILY®HMOs Applications:

As a prebiotic, it promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as bifidobacteria, while inhibiting the proliferation of harmful bacteria (e.g E. coli and Clostridium perfringens). In addition, BABYILY®HMOs can regulate the composition and abundance of the intestinal flora and maintain the intestinal microecological balance.

BABYILY®HMOs can adsorb to the surface of intestinal cells, preventing the attachment of pathogenic bacteria and thus reducing the risk of infection. In addition, HMOs can regulate the activity of immune cells and reduce inflammatory responses.

 Brain development

Certain components of BABYILY®HMOs (e.g.salivary acids) play an important role in brain development and cognitive function in infants and young children. They are able to pass through intestinal cells into the bloodstream, which in turn distributes them to the brain, providing the necessary nutritional support for neurodevelopment.

■ Type

There is a wide variety of HMOs and more than 200 structurally recognized HMOs have been identified in human milk, the most abundant and well studied of which are 2'-fucosyl lactose (2'-FL), 3'-fucosyllactose (3'-FL), 3'-sialic acid-based lactose (3'-SL), 6'-sialic acid-based lactose (6'-SL), lactose-di-fucosyltetrasaccharide (DFL), lactose-N-neotetrasaccharide (LNnT), lactose-N-tetrasaccharide (LNT), and others.

At present, there are a total of 15 globally approved HMOs, but in terms of long-term development, we believe that there are other HMOs components with commercial value and have made relevant technical reserves for them. In recent years, China has made significant progress in the research of HMOs. 2'-Fucose-based lactose (2'-FL) is one of the most intensively researched HMOs, and is approved for use in infant formula in 2023.

BABYILY®HMOs is available in the following specification and contents:

  BABYILY®HMOs 3'-Fucosyllactose

  BABYILY®HMOs 3'-Sialyllactose

  BABYILY®HMOs 6'-Sialyllactose

  BABYILY®HMOs 5 HMOs

  BABYILY®HMOs 6 HMOs

 Anti-pathogen

BABYILY®HMOs have anti-adhesive and antimicrobial properties that effectively prevent the attack of intestinal pathogens. 2'-Fucose-based lactose (2'-FL) has been shown to have a significant inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in in vitro experiments.

■ Infant Formula

BABYILY®HMOs are an important component of human milk and have the ability to regulate intestinal flora, improve immune system function, promote brain development, have anti-inflammatory properties, and reduce respiratory infections. Therefore, HMOs are widely used in infant formulas to provide nutritional and health benefits similar to those of human milk.

■ Specialty Medical Use Formula

BABYILY®HMOs are also increasingly used in specialty foods. For example, the launch of the first HMO specialty food in China marks the leap from "running with" to "running alongside" or even "leading" in the field of HMOs by specialty powder companies.

■ Food Fortification

The National Health Commission approved two HMO raw materials to become new varieties of food fortification, which can be used in baby powder, infant milk powder, special medical use infant formula and other products, further expanding the application scope of HMO.
